Ekkerøy

Foto: Varanger Museum
Ekkerøy is one of the oldest Norwegian fishing villages in Varanger, and has been permanently settled since the middle ages. While Ekkerøy is landfast today, stories tell of a time when one could sail between Ekkerøy and the mainland. These days the fishing village is a popular destination for excursions, with a renowned bird cliff located 12 km east of Vadsø. The Kjeldsen fish processing plant (established 1911) is well preserved, and is one of only a few intact fish factories from the period before the Second World War. The processing plant, which comprises a jetty, storehouse, cod liver oil steamer, boathouse and gutting shed, started production in 1911. The Kjeldsen fish plant is part of Varanger Museum, and is open to the public throughout the summer with a café and temporary exhibitions.
